Weekly Community Meet-Up Highlights

The last community meet-up of 2024 was a delightful mix of personal anecdotes, creative ideas, and lively discussions that took us from pet-sitting tales to the expansive universe of Star Wars. If you missed it, here are the highlights that made our chat so memorable.

Paws and Whiskers Adventures
We kicked things off with a walk through Washington, where one attendee shared their pet-sitting escapades. From feeding kittens to observing impeccably behaved dog packs, we discovered the joys and quirks of caring for animals. The conversation turned to the art of dog training, with insights on teaching leash manners and calming noisy pups. It left us thinking: could there be a better way to spend a crisp winter day?

A Barbecue Christmas? Why Not!
Forget the turkey—this year’s surprise tradition was Christmas barbecuing! Attendees shared their grilling experiences, from sizzling sausages to shrimp cocktails atop fresh greens. It was a delicious reminder that holiday traditions can be as unique as the people celebrating them. Who says barbecues are just for summer?

Star Wars Nostalgia at Its Best
The Force was strong in this meet-up as we dove into the latest Star Wars series, "Skeleton Crew." Many agreed it captured the charm and optimism of classic Spielberg films while offering fresh, edge-of-your-seat excitement. Comparisons with other Star Wars productions sparked spirited debate, and we’re all eagerly awaiting what’s next in the galaxy far, far away.

Tech Marvels and Creative Sparks
Cutting-edge tech had its moment, too. From the blazing-fast transfer speeds of Thunderbolt drives to the immersive potential of the Quest 3 VR headset, the conversation showcased how innovation continues to reshape creativity. We even explored the possibilities of AI-generated visuals and 3D filming—perfect tools for storytellers looking to bring their visions to life.

Finding Hope in Unexpected Places
Amid the buzz, there was a reflective moment about the comfort animals bring and their surprising connection to spiritual themes. One touching story of holding a lamb in Bethlehem led to a beautiful analogy of Christmas as a time when God carries us with care and love. It was a poignant reminder of the deeper meanings behind our shared celebrations.

If you would like to join me and the rest of the community for a chat, tune in this Wednesday, January 1 at 8 PM CET (2 PM EST, 11 AM PST). You can find the live stream under the 'Meet-up' tab in the Community Forum!

Why Would a Catholic Priest Write a Fantasy Novel?
On January 1, I embarked on the daunting journey of writing my first fantasy novel. I've written a couple of books and essays in the past, but now I’m tackling something I’ve dreamt about ever since I discovered Tolkien's Middle-earth as a teenager.   What if? While traveling through Ireland in October last year, I heard fascinating tales of Irish saints confronting sea monsters, taming dang...
Make 2025 Your Personal Holy Year
"Avanti, Padre, avanti!" As I stood in front of the Holy Door on the right side of St. Peter's Basilica, the security guard's gesture made it clear I had to keep moving. I had paused to snap a photo, but with thousands of pilgrims behind me, I was holding up the line. This was in 2016, during the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. It was a rare "bonus" Jubilee, as normally, a Jubilee Year only ...
